Le fabuleux joueur de Dobro Josh Graves nous a quittés à l'âge de 79 ans, paix à son âme et bon boeuf tout là haut avec les autres disparus !

Uncle Josh Graves, a past member of The Foggy Mountain Boys and the
Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass passed away yesterday after a
long time with numerous health problems. Burkett Graves (Buck and
Josh or Uncle Josh were his nicknames) was born in Tellico Plains, TN
on September 27, 1927. He died Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the
age of 79 after the conclusion of the International Bluegrass Music
Association's annual gala event.

Uncle Josh was the influential force that introduced the dobro to
bluegrass music shortly after joining Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and
the Foggy Mountain Boys in 1955. He was inducted into the
International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor in 1997. While working on
the WLEX Kentucky Mountain Barn Dance in Lexington in 1949, he
learned from Earl Scruggs the three-finger banjo roll and adapted it
to the then almost obscure slide bar instrument.

Several months after Lester & Earl joined the Opry, Josh Graves was
hired as a comedian as well as the bass player. He performed with
many of the founders of bluegrass music. He had worked with Wheeling
Jamboree with Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, Esco Hankins and Mac
Wiseman's Country Boys, Toby Stround, and others in both bluegrass
and country music.

Graves remained a primary member of the Foggy Mountain Boys until the
group disbanded in 1969 and Lester and Earl decided to each do their
own music, Lester Flatt's new band, the Nashville Grass continued
with the traditional bluegrass sound. Flatt hired Roland White, Jake
Tullock, Vic Jordan and Paul Warren for the new band. The band
recorded with RCA Victor and became the first country band to sign
with the label since the 50's. Josh Graves was part of that historic
lineup.

In 1974, Graves started his solo career after three years with the
Earl Scruggs Review. In 1984, he partnered with Kenny Baker and later
in 1990, Eddie Adcock created the Masters - a short-lived group that
included Josh Graves on the Dobro. Kenny Baker was on fiddle and
Jesse McReynolds played the mandolin. Adcock was on guitar. The group
managed to receive the IBMA award for Instrumental Recording of the
Year in that year.

The persona "Uncle Josh" was created while Graves was a teenager in
the early 1940's as an announcer on WROL Knoxville. This is probably
where his comedian talents were best developed and known. As a master
of the resonator guitar in various country, traditional and bluegrass
genres, Graves recorded on many albums as both the featured artists
or as a guest artist. His humor, talent and creativity are just part
of the attributes of this outstanding individual.

Historian Bill C. Malone summarized Graves' abilities as follows:
"Graves perfected a rolling syncopated style that enabled him to play
galloping breakdowns as well as slow love songs or ballads'. He was
attracted to the dobro as a child on hearing Cliff Carlisle play on
Jimmie Rodgers' recordings, and he later met Carlisle, who gave him
help and encouragement. He was also influenced in his early career by
the dobro playing of Pete Kirby (Bashful Brother Oswald). He learned
not only dobro but also guitar and bass, and in 1942, he made his
professional debut with the Pierce Brothers."
