| Hi,
how many of you do play a Baritone Weissenborn? I saw there are 3 threads about baritones in this forum - thats not too much. Only a few baritone players here?
Why I am asking? Because Ermanno Pasqualato has just started building one for me. Size 27". So not as big as those built by Rance White, but big enough.
I want to tune it real low: G D G B D G. What string gauge will I need? What do you think - or better know? ;-)
Greetings from Vienna, Austria Michael

| Welcome Michael, yes it is true very few persons use Weissenborn baritone, there are so very few guitarists who also use Weissenborn, I think that Fred Kinbom possesses one, sending he a MP | |

| I search on the net and it seems to me that the John Pearse strings were the best ones...
If you are used to heavy gauges, I would recommend 16 or 17 to 70 or 76. But that implies that you have to buy separates strings, because that set does not exist as far as I know.
EDIT: Found it!! [url]http://www.juststrings.com/johnpearsebaritoneguitar.html[url]

| I play a baritone Weissenborn made by Paddy Burgin in New Zealand. It is a custom order guitar with 27.4" scale (like a cello). I use the following string gauges: .017p .021w .031 .042 .057 .072 I tune it to Bb (in open D format) most of the time - sometimes down to A, and in Gm format tunings. I experimented with different gauges until I found what suited this particular guitar best. I use Newtone Aloha strings (custom gauge). It sounds huge! For some sound samples, check out the tune "The Jolly Baker of Aachen" on my website and this video demonstration. Enjoy your baritone Weissenborn! Fred | |

| Thank you for your advice, Fred - didnt even know that theses Newtone Aloha strings (custom gauge) starting from 0.17 exist. I dream of using G (Open D Mode) - dou you think, that works with these strings? Still enough tension then?

| Hi Michael, In G they would probably be quite slack, but possibly still playable (I used to tune down a standard-scale Oahu to B (D format) and while it is a bit more difficult playing on such slack strings it sounded great!). Newtone make just about any gauge string you ask them. When I ordered my first baritone set they included both a plain and a wound second (.021) string! I had never thought of a wound second string, but after trying both I preferred it - it sounds more uniform across the register with the wound second, and I guess too heavy plain strings can sound a bit dull. But I think what you'll have to do is try different gauges on your particular guitar to see what sounds best. I have found that different guitars sound their best in certain tunings and registers. Get some various gauges and experiment. The heaviest 6th string I tried was a .076 (!) and this would probably work better for G than the .072, but it might also sound a bit duller (speak to the luthier about these heavy gauges beforehand - don't try something that he thinks would be too heavy for your guitar!). And please post some samples of your baritone when you get it! Viel Spaß! Fred | |

| Jusqu'à quelle note peut-on descendre dans le grave avec un Weisseinborn baryton ? Et, jusqu'à quel diamètre max peut-on monter ? ... à l'avance Merci,
What diameter (gauge) max and what most low bass note is possible ? Up to what is it possible to go down in the bass note with a baritone Weisseinborn ? And, up to what diameter max is it possible to go up? ... beforehand Thank you,
